GRIT Series: What is HIIT and 3 Reasons Why You Should Try It!

February 16, 2015

You work from 9 to 5, or otherwise occupied with piling responsibilities, how in the world would you have time to exercise? Be it to keep your figure, bulk up your muscles or just simply to improve your general health, exercising has become a very important necessity. But when you have no time to spare to work out, you have to figure out a way around it. So now the question is: Is there actually a way to fit in exercise in your hectic daily routine?

The answer? GRIT Series.

GRIT Series is one of the GGX classes offered by Gold's Gym. It employs High Intensity Interval Training method. With it being all the hype in the fitness world for a few years now, people would probably have heard about High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). But for those who are not familiar with the term, here’s the 411.

HIIT is a challenging cardiovascular training in a form of quick and intense burst of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active, recovery periods. The main goal is to get the maximum results by maximizing effort in minimum amount of time. It creates an oxygen shortage during the effort, thus causing your body to ask for more oxygen during recovery. This after-burn effect is called Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC).

Here’s 3 reasons why you should try HIIT!
1. HIIT to a certain extent can help with weight loss
Higher intensity of exercise has been found to elicit larger EPOCs. Knab, et al. had found that after a high intensity exercise, their subject’s EPOC remained elevated 14 hours post-exercise burning 13.5 kcal/hour. Over a period of 52 weeks doing 3 session of the high intensity exercise per week, the total calorie burned due to EPOC accumulated to 29,640 calories, which is equal to 3.8 kg. This shows that over an extended period of time, an increase in EPOC play a measurable role in weight loss.

2. HIIT helps improve our general health
The maximum oxygen consumption during exercise, VO2Max, and insulin sensitivity play important roles in preventing morbidity and mortality, and HIIT has been shown to help improve both. Tabata and colleagues had demonstrated that HIIT could increase VO2Max by 10 – 13% in a more time-efficient manner in comparison to longer aerobic sessions with lower intensity. HIIT can also break down stored muscle glycogen faster; hence there will be an increase in glucose uptake from the blood. This means HIIT will be beneficial for type II diabetics.

3. HIIT helps increase athletic performance
Participating in HIIT has been shown to improve athletic performance, even in already well-trained athletes. A study by Driller and colleagues has shown that there’s a 2% improvement in endurance just after 7 sessions of HIIT in the athletes participating in the study.

So, whether you're looking for an exercise that's fast but effective, or the usual work out routine has started to bore you out, you can give GRIT Series a try. Who knows? This might be your way to the body you've always wanted!
