How Being Organized Can Affect Your Overall Health

April 4, 2014

As a part of the modern society lifestyle, we are so used to having tons of activities throughout the day. From working, client meetings, going to gym, to grocery shopping, and hanging out with your pals, and not to forget, visiting your family or relatives. Is it possible to do them all?

Get a Maximum Result!

According to Laura Stacks, the author of What to Do When There’s too Much to Do: Reduce Tasks, Increase Results and Save 90 Minutes a Day, being able to manage your time well will enable you to get maximum results of whatever things you do. Good time management will ensure you do not rush things, know your priority, and are more focused in finishing the tasks at hand. So before you leave your house, make sure all your needs for the day are packed nicely in your bag and try to think of all activities you need to do in a day to avoid going back and forth through the traffic because you forget to do or bring something important.

Being Unorganized Makes You Stress & Exhausted

Being unorganized can affect you in many ways, from ruining your schedule to affecting your health, mentally and physically, now that’s scary!

Poor time management skill sometimes forces you to finish a few tasks fast. For example, preparing the presentation for tomorrow’s meeting while finishing a pile of work that is all due today. If you do not manage your time well, you will have to work overtime and possibly skip your good night sleep. The result? Grumpy face, mood swings, and inability to perform the next day.

According to dr. Ari Fahrial Syam SpPD-KGEH, MMB from FKUI –RSCM, human body has limitations and certainly needs enough rest each day. Forcing your body to work overtime will exhaust the whole system, “Exhaustion can affect your overall health, trigger many chronic diseases, and decrease the immune system. Exhaustion and stress will impact your metabolism and hormonal process in the body,” he explained.

Still according to dr. Syam, time management skill is needed to live a healthy lifetyle. In general, your body works hard for 8 hours, works lightly for another 8 hours, and needs 8 hours to rest too. Occasionally, making your body works overtime and getting less sleep is acceptable, do not make it a habit though. But not sleeping for more than 24 hours will definitely cause bodily disorder. Your body and mind will be exhausted and stressed out. Big no-no!

Manage Your Time Right

Do not be overwhelmed by your activities, FIMELA and Gold’s Gym have compiled some useful time management tips.

Make a To Do List –
Eventhough it seems simple, make a to-do list a night before. It is useful to ensure your time is used effectively and productively. Always sneak in some extra times for unexpected activities in your list.

Make a Good Use of Spare Times – Meeting cancelled or even finished earlier than planned? Does not mean you can slack around and spend hours at your favorite coffee shop. Utilize this unexpected spare time to start working on your next tasks. Be ahead of the game!

Focus – This is the hard part for some people…Focus on one thing, that is your main priority of the day and do some things to help you get it done, like switching off your mobile phone, hanging a “do not disturb” sign, or even playing a slow beat song in low volume to help you relax and concentrate on the job.

Rely on Your Gadget– Organize your hectic schedule with the help of your mobile phone. Write down all the regular activities and set a reminder for important highlights. Forget about the oldskool way of marking the calendar to remind you of meetings or other events and rely on technology instead!

One Day Preparation – To save time, prepare stuff that you need a day or a night in advance. Store your homemade healthy breakfast and lunch in the fridge to be reheated in the morning or if you are planning to go to gym, strut all your gym needs in your gym bag the night before. Doing those things will save you a lot of time, especially if you ‘accidentally’ hit the snooze button in the morning and oversleep.

Set a Deadline – Procrastinating dies hard. Especially for people who are used to being unorganized. To stop procrastinating, the first step you need to do is setting a deadline for every task. 1 hour for exercising, 30 minutes for dinner, 1 hour for quality time with your family, and 30 minutes to prepare all you need for the next day. By doing so, you will get used to using your time effectively.

Join a Yoga Class – We all know that exercising is good for mental and physical health, but yoga is especially good to balance your body and mind, giving you more ability to relax and focus on arranging your hectic schedule.
