Doctor’s Order: A Deliciously Healthy Smoothies

Healthy food and indulgence, it’s two words that don’t go together in our head. Anything that taste divinely good must not be good for us; that’s what we’ve been told anyway. This is one belief held by the masses that two young female doctors named Dewi H. Suhendro, Anita Santoso, and their acquaintance Veronica Husein, wanted to challenge. They got together and tried to come up with recipes for smoothies made only with organic and fresh ingredients, from veggies to fruits and even grains, and they ended up with a healthy concoction that’s also a treat!

 

We talked to one of the founder of Bits Smoothies & Beyond, dr. Dewi. She told us that from the start they wanted to make something that’s healthy but still taste good for the masses, so that they actually want to eat healthy rather than it being a chore. “Our passion is more towards prevention. It’s time we Indonesian people focus on trying to stay healthy rather than treat illness when it’s too late. Most diseases can be prevented by adopting a healthier diet and lifestyle,” said Dewi. All items on their menu have gone through extensive research to assure its quality and health benefits are optimum.

 

She then continued to explain what exactly goes in to her smoothies, “Every bottle of smoothies consist of veggies, fruits, and so-called superfood that’s high in fiber, vitamins, and other beneficial nutrients. The aforementioned superfoods are actually mostly grains, like flax seeds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, and many others. Seemingly small and insignificant, grains actually have tones of health benefits! Take chia seeds for example, it’s high in fiber and contains high level of omega-3 essential fatty acid like the one normally found in salmon.

 

The vegetables and fruits are mainly used for their fiber contents. Their choices of vegetables range from spinach, lettuce to the less readily available here in Indonesia’s market, Kale.  For the fruits, they like to use dragon fruit, guava, banana, and even papaya, but they try to refrain from fruits that are less healthy like durian or jackfruit. To make sure that you are getting the optimum amount of nutrients in the smoothies, make sure you consume the smoothies immediately. Even if refrigerated, they could only last for 24 hours. For those of you trying to lose weight, than you should look no further! Eating something that’s in a liquid form has been proven to prolong the feeling of satiety. Not only for weight loss regime, smoothies also helps detoxify our body, brightening our skin, and safe to be used as an additional nutrition for kids, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

 

Other than their extensive line of colorful and scrumptious smoothies, Bits Smoothies & Beyond also sells a variety of healthy snacks made delicious that’s low fat, low calorie, and gluten-free. Too bad you can only order their products from their online shop on instagram. They have no plan to open a stall in near future.
